What is Neurolink?

Neurolink is a tech-based company owned by Elon Musk with the intention of originating a ‘brain-computer interface’ to implant it in a human body to manipulate devices such as laptops, computers, or keyboards. According to builtin.com, ‘Neuralink implanted its first device in a patient’s brain in January 2024. The patient, who is paralyzed below the shoulders, played chess on his laptop using the Neuralink device.’ The interface has extinguished features such as “recording, and decoding neural signals and then transmitting information back to the brain using electrical stimulation.” as per Ramses Alcaide, CEO of Neurable, a neurotech company. Neurolink is also working on an app that allows users to interact with an output device, for example, keyboard or mouse, using their minds. ‘Brain-computer interface’ is surgically fitted into a human’s body, the skull, which helps the user emit signals that allow for controlling devices for example, keyboard.

Why was it introduced?

The world is evolving rapidly, especially in the field of technology. So, why is it required to introduce such a product in a market? As per Neurolink’s website, its objective and motive are to potentially leave an impact that “brain-computer interfaces have the potential to change lives for the better. We want to bring this technology from the lab into peoples' homes.” The purpose of the expedition is to “create a generalized brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs today and unlock human potential tomorrow,” according to the website.

Is it a blessing?

In the views of people and the articles available online, Neurolink proves to be a useful and carefully thought product, as evidenced by its great impact on patients diagnosed with any type of paralysis. Introducing brain-computer interface (BCI), helps patients prevent movement, which acts as one of the measures to avoid worsening the condition. Moreover, patients restricted from interacting with the outer world can use Neurolink as a mode of communication. Additionally, the implantation of these brain-computer interface (BCI) is done by surgical robot, as per Neurolink’s website. Thus, there are fewer chances of error compared to humans, as robots ensure no human-error takes place. The implantation allows the user or patients to be able to manipulate devices and communicate anywhere. The battery for the brain-computer interface (BCI) is wireless through ‘a compact, inductive charger.’ The seamless brain-computer interface (BCI) increases productivity, easy and dependable to control and use devices, for example, computer.

Or is it a curse?

In contrast, the immense amount of advanced technology involved makes the procedure to obtain brain-computer interface (BCI) into your human body quite expensive. Including the fact, there are high chances of misuse of Neurolink. Nowadays, even the use of social media has created jobs, a source of income, easy contact with long-distance friends and relatives, and a socializing community platform.

Eventually, misuse arises as conflict, as little kids and grown-ups are now addicts, corroding their part of life unintentionally. Easy access for hackers to barge into personal data stored on your devices. So misuse of brain-computer interface (BCI) could lead to an increase in the cybercrime rate. So what do you think about the introduction of 3 Neurolink to the world?
